What is ASD?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is categorised by:
- Social impairment and or communication
- Repetitive or restrictive behaviour patterns
Diagnosis is usually made by a clinical psychologist or by a Neuropaed.
These are some of the red flags that are usually indicated during assessment and also expressed from parent interview and feedback.
- Lack of eye contact or poor social skills
- Lack of interest in playing or engaging with others
- Repetitive behaviour
- Speech development delay
- Speech used in an unconventional or inappropriate way
- Echolalia (repeating words as heard from another)
- Sensory dysregulation
- Sensitivity to noises or light or avoiding large crowds
- Playing with toys in an unconventional way, eg: lining up toys
- Lack of imagination
- Stimming, eg: rocking back & forth, flapping hands when excited or upset
- Obsessive behaviour or interests
- Lack of empathy
- Lack of imagination
- Understand things in a literal sense
- Trouble expressing emotions
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the nervous system, the brain during childhood development. Like ASD it is one of the most common disorders. The forward (/) slash between Attention deficit and Hyperactivity means that people could have either or both presentations of being inattentive or impulsive. People with ADHD can have strengths of hyperfocus and hyperactivity.
Behavioural
Excitability, fidgeting, hyperactivity, impulsivity, irritability, lack of restraint, or persistent repetition of words or actions
Cognitive:
Absent-mindedness, difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, problem paying attention, or short attention span
Mood
Anger, anxiety, boredom, excitement, or mood swings
Also common:
Depression or learning disability

ASD & ADHD: How do they overlap?
Autism and ADHD are both neurodevelopmental disorders that can cause significant challenges for those affected. However, there is a considerable amount of overlap between the two conditions, which is why we are able to assist students with both autism and ADHD.
